Looking to buy an LCD TV?
April 28th, 2009 | by Stu Foster |LCD TVs command less space than a conventional television due to flat screen technology, giving you more options on placement. Flat panel televisions are available in plasma and LCD technologies. The way the two technologies work are quite different and both excel in certain conditions.
How does the LCD make a picture?
LCD TVs come in many variations. The first being the LCD panel, which isn't only used in TVs. The technology in LCD TVs is also used in various technologies such as microwave ovens and stereo systems. The technology used in LCD TVs is known as 'Twisted Nematic'. It is a crystalline structure that reacts to electrical currents in a manner that can be harnessed to produce a picture. The structure untwists depending on the voltage passing through. The 'Twisted Nematic' crystals are squashed between many layers of polarized glass enabling different amounts of light to pass through and it's this that forms the TV picture you see.
Most agree that if you are purchasing a flat television panel smaller than 37, you should buy a LCD TV. Larger LCD panels tend to not be as crisp. You will find that the plasma TV is better, if bigger. There are two exceptions if the room is very bright, the LCD is superior and LCD also is more resistant to burn in from sources like computers and TV video game consoles. LCD can burn out but occur much less than earlier models. Many models are now High Definition (HDTV) capable as well.
How Long Will it Last?
LCD TV's will last many years, much longer than the CRT TV you may have right now. They are a sound investment and will provide you many thousands of hours worth of entertainment.
