Hava HD Platinum – 1080i vs 720p vs 480p – Quality Comparison

Let me start by saying to anyone that does not have a Hava. No it does NOT record in HD, it downscales all images to 720x480i, however you can play in HD while recording. The only problem is the Hava does a terrible job at downscaling the images, creating pixelation, especially while in 720p. Which basically defeats the entire point of buying one.

So if you're looking into buying one, take note of this first! If you want nice quality video (recorded) while playing in HD, then do not bother, just wait for something better or if you're rich buy a $600 HD Capture Card. But if you don't care that much about the video quality, think the 1080i quality is good enough, or just can't play in HD to begin with, then the Hava is great. BTW Amazon has good prices for the Platinum, you'll also want to buy some RCA Couplers, a 3 prong for Composite cords, 5 prongs for Component.

As you can see, 720p looks like horse @#$%, also has huge interlacing problems, even though I deinterlaced all footage in the video. 1080i looks OK but still has noticeable pixelation, especially in small text. 480p looks very nice and clean, although a little darker, but that's very easily fixed in editing. You can even adjust that in the Hava Setup/Player so that it records a brighter, more vivid picture to begin with.

If anyone knows any tricks on how to get the 1080i & 720p to look better, please let me know in the comments or you can send me a message. Same thing if you have any questions.

this is just a heads-up to those of you that are looking to purchase an HDMI cable. The brand ATAK has an HDMI cable out that has a bad signal and doesn't transfer the video and audio from ur playstation to the HD tv. look out for the cheap , a good hdmi cable should cost no less than 35 bucks. this bad one i got was only $15. i should have known there was a catch.

FAQ's are at the bottom of this description.

When people try to find how to record video game consoles (Like I did at one point) on youtube and other places, they are generally flooded with videos talking about the Dazzle Platinum. By all means, the Dazzle is a GREAT unit; however, for people like me I couldn't bear to look at my PS3 and Xbox 360 in Standard definition. I didn't go pay $2000 for a TV to be played in standard definition!

This is the cheapest and best consumer way to do this (IE: There isn't alot of clutter like some alternatives). Honestly, the price you pay for this is great for what you get.

Important Note: If you think the HAVA is too expensive, and your leaning towards a Dazzle... Don't. I highly recommend checking out the BlitzBox HD unit. It's valued under $99, and while I don't think it has quite the quality I like and is lacking a few features that I like specifically about the wireless, if your in this for PURELY console recording I HIGHLY recommend one for people who are a bit money strapped.

FAQ:
What consoles can you record with this?

Basically any console except all the hand helds EXCLUDING the PSP Slim. Since this has component input jacks, you ARE able to record the PSP Slim.

How do you connect the Hava unit to your PC?

In essence, you don't. You connect the HAVA unit to your local area network via ethernet cable or wirelessly. You can then receive the signal from your PC which you record simply by opening the Hava Player application and clicking the record button.

Why can't I get a wireless connection on my Hava unit?

For your Hava to send out a wireless connection, you have to set the hava up on a wireless connection (Using the install disk). Tedious, yes. But it's not THAT difficult.

How good is the recording quality?

The quality is actually quite super-b. I've never seen such good quality from a recorder (I've used 3 capture cards before this which all gave me blurry pictures instead of non-anti aliased ones). It's meant as a DVR to watch TV programs streamed... So it's VERY good.

Do I have to use the software the Hava comes with or can I use programs like Virtual Dub?

After testing it, programs like Virtual Dub do work which allows you to bypass the limitations that the Hava software comes with in terms of detail and frames per second. Please note that some people do have problems getting these programs to work with Hava because it says they "have no access to that driver"
Do I specifically need the Hava Wireless HD? Or can I use other Hava units?

You can use any Hava unit except for "Hava Gold" as stated in the video. I just prefer the Wireless HD unit over the rest due to it's non-mini jack design like the others have which would require finding a component coupler instead of a 2nd component cable.

What kind of a cable do you need to buy if I purchased the Hava Titanium or Platinum? I noticed that the component will not plug into the back of it. Where do you find the special cable that you need to purchase?

If you bought the Hava Platinum or Titanium you theoretically don't need to buy any cables. It comes with 2 component cables; however, if you bought you want to presumably hook it up to a console (like I think you do), you will need 2 cables. One would be the appropriate HD cable for your console, and the other would be a component extension cable or a component coupler. The latter will probably be more viable. Basically all a coupler is, is a small female double ended "cable" that is pretty self explanatory. You will also need 1 RCA coupler/audio coupler to hook the audio in if your component coupler doesn't support audio.

How "efficient" does the HAVA record? How much space am I approximately using when recording with the HAVA?

The HAVA by default records with at a D1 resolution using MPG2 compression; however, if you know what you are doing you can change the resolution and compression. I will not explain how to do this, so don't ask (It could brick your HAVA if you are not careful). Approximately, you use 50 megabytes of space per minute of recording. This value varies on what you are recording.

GT 5 Prologue and GT HD are the two games used. Hope you enjoy!

Drifting on GT HD, download only from Playstation Store, for free. Car: Mitsubishi Evo V tuned.

Menu from GT 5 Prologue, but the graphics of game play are basically the same if not better than GT HD. Car: BMW M3 Coupe, however i now have a Ferrari F 430, this vidoe is a bit old.

CGRHD reviews MAGNAVOX ODYSSEY 2 CONTROLLER

Classic Game Room HD reviews the controller for the Magnavox Odyssey video game system. Actually it's more like a computer than a video game console... in some ways. It has a keyboard built into the thing, and that makes it cool. The single button joystick controller feels like one of those really old school 1980's computer joysticks. Super spring loaded, has an action button. Works well and is physically hard wired into the O2 game system. Take that Atari! You have to plug joysticks into the Atari 2600, not so with the massive Maggie. Games like K.C. Munchkin kick with these awesome controllers. See their super close up detailed featured with the CHRHD-MightyMacro function. You can watch other videos where they show close ups of half naked beautiful women in their underwear or bikinis... or you can watch this video with super close ups of a 30 year old joystick. It's really your choice. Those women are probably phonies anyway. This controller is the real deal. Does not work with newer consoles like the Playstation 3 PS3, PS2, Wii or Xbox 360, primarily because these controller are literally stuck for all time to the O2. You see, they can't be unplugged. No matter what. Not even hot chicks with their clothes off can unplug them because they don't have plugs. Even if the girls are on swings or dancing on the bar, they can't do it. This is retro old school arcade action. If you want girls in lingere then hopefully you didn't end up here. Although maybe the Magnavox Odyssey 2 is enjoyed by models and actresses and exotic dancers... who can say? The O2 is pretty awesome.

There are many people out there who are having problem connecting PS3 and Acer or other monitors. This video will prove that it works perfectly. My PS3 is using the latest firmware 2.10 now. 1080p supported and very sharp and clear. Much better than my friend's 32" Philips LCD TV

Required:

-Monitor with DVI input (HDCP Support)
-HDMI/DVI cable or HDMI Cable with HDMI to DVI Converter (Cheap)
-RCA Phono Female to Male Jack audio or similar (Cheap)

What I have:

-Monitor: Acer X222W 22" TFT Monitor
-HDMI Cable from Game £12
-HDMI to DVI Converter from Currys £2.48
-RCA Phono Female to Male Jack from Ebay £0.99

That's it. It should work fine. I have to admit I got some trouble while setting up this monitor.

The down side of using some of the tft monitors (including this) will be:

-Cannot play PS1 or PS2 games
-Cannot play DVD movies

I think that is because the monitor doesn't support lower resolution.

Classic Game Room HD looks at and reviews the unique styling of the video game cartridges for the Magnavox Odyssey 2 video game console system. These are very different from cartridges that you might find for the Atari 2600, 5200 or 7800 systems. For one thing they have giant handles on them, and that's awesome. This makes them easy to carry around with you, wear as an accessory or pull out of the game system if you've been playing with mustard. The Maggie O2 is a great game system with some fun games like KC Munchkin!, Speedway! and CRYPTO-LOGIC! It's a good thing they made this handy cartridge design, too bad it didn't catch on. Games for the PS3, Playstation 3, Dreamcast, Sega Saturn, Xbox 360 or Gamecube could have benefitted from this amazing handle clad cartridge. This isn't a commercial for the Odyssey or a review of any particular gameplay or footage, this is a straight up review of the design of the plastic cartridge. Only on CGRHD will you see crap like this.

What is the difference between HDTV and HDMI?

I recently bought a LDC tv. Do I need to buy a Digital TV converter box?
I'm really confused between LCD and HDTV and HDMI. What is all of that about?

So I read through these answers and some of them sound like a 1st grader explaining that rain is gods tears. Some of the other answers are almost right. SO here is the real answer. LCD does in fact stand for liquid crystal display and is a type of screen that displays the picture passing light through small crystals. Not all LCD tv's are HD, it will say if it is an HDTV or not. A few years ago about half were HD and the other half just standard but now the majority of LCD televisions are HD. Also HD screens are wider giving you an aspect ratio of 16x9 which is rectangular as opposed to the older 4x3 aspect ratio that is more square. HDTV stands for high definition television, The "HD" is a signal displaying more lines of resolution than the old standard def. More lines results in a clearer more crisp picture. 1080p, 720p, 1080i, are the 3 different resolution line specs for HD broadcasts. Your HDTV may either be native 720p or native 1080p. A 1080p tv can display a 1080p signal which is considered the best of HD. Currently there are no networks that broadcast anything in 1080p, only bluray, XBOX360 and PS3 have 1080p content. All networks broadcast in 1080i or 720p. the number stands for the lines of resolution the letter "p" stands for progressive which is the way the tv scans the lines. Whether your tv is 1080p or 720p it will still receive all networks and if you have bluray or either game console it will still be in HD, the signal is just converted internally to 1080i so don't think you won't be able to display your xbox in HD, it just won't be 1080p and to tell you the truth, you wouldn't see a difference anyway between 1080p, 720p or 1080i. The "i" stands for interlaced which means the tv scans every other line starting with the odd numbers and then goes back and scans the even lines, all this is done at 60 times per second which gives you a picture. Progressive scans the lines straight down.
