Is it safe to buy a used LCD/Plasma HDTV?

December 17th, 2008 | by admin |

Hi, i am looking for a new TV, and am finding some decently priced nice TVs. I was wondering if its a good idea to buy used TVs, any input would be great! thank you!

also: what brands are safe? LG, Samsung, Sony, Pioneer, Sharp?
thanks

Uh, the answer is, it depends. I love my plasma and it's almost 4 years old and still looks great, but I don't have it on for most of the day, and a used plasma might have had some heavy use; there's just no easy way to know. I would not buy a used one unless I saw it powered on with an HD picture in it first.

As for what brands, consumerreports.org has great reports on product reliability for different brands. There's a small cost to access such data but for me it's been well worth it, as I can look at ratings for just about anything, and that info can save you tons of money in the long run.

I wouldn’t…you lose any warranty upon transfer of ownership.
