I have an eight year old hdtv and the picture is getting really dull…?

You don't say, but if the Tv is a rear projection type it could be that the lamp is almost shot (They wear out and get dull or die entirely). IF that's the case a new lamp should do wonders.
On the other hand, if it's a plasma or LCD they will dull with time (although unless you have used it almost continually it shouldn't have dulled more than 20-30% in 8 years of normal use). It may be time for a service call to get a professional opinion, or to consider a new TV. The new models offer a lot of advantages and prices have dropped a long way relative to when you bought.
