I wanna use my HDTV as my computer moniter…please help!?

October 6th, 2008 | by admin |

I asked a question not too long ago, and the guy that helped me, well, I thought he gave me a great answer, but it just left me more questions...

I have a Mintek 26" HDTV. Yes I know, not a known company. And I wanna use it as my computer moniter. Now the guy that helped me last time told me about VGA and DVI cables. Well then I ran into a problem. My computer has a VGA input, and my TV has a DVI, but no VGA. What can I do? Is there some sort of HDMI to VGA cable? Or maybe an adapter that turns DVI into VGA?

You cannot use an adapter to convert VGA to DVI. You should consider upgrading your computer's video board to add a DVI output.

Yes, you most certainly CAN convert VGA to DVI!

There are two types of VGA to DVI conversion:

    1. Simple passive pin conversion. This type of adapter can be purchased as either an adapter "barrel" or as an adapter cable, and will work if the DVI jack is "DVI-I" and is analog capable as well as digital. It will have holes for the RGB/S analog pins (those are the four holes/pins around the blade/slot off to one side of the connector). Check the DVI jack for those holes!

These cost much less than the other, expensive type…

    2. An active-circuitry converter device which converts the analog signals to digital for DVI-D inputs.
DVI-D can only use digital video and so it doesn't have the four holes around the blade/slot (if you try to plug a DVI-I plug into it, it won't go in, because the holes are not there for the pins).

Note: We're talking $20 vs. $300 here! So, if you are in situation #2, it would be cheaper to upgrade to a video card that has DVI-D output.

FYI: You can also adapt VGA to HDMI, but since VGA is analog RGB, and HDMI is digital ONLY, you have to use the very expensive active-circuitry type of adapter to convert the analog to digital (but you can adapt DVI-D to HDMI with a simple pin-conversion adaptor!).

DVI-I has integrated digital and analog, DVI-D is digital only.

Adaptor "barrel" to go from VGA cable (from computer) to DVI-I jack (which you hopefully have on your HDTV): See model number DVI-8700 on this page… http://www.markertek.com/SearchProduct.asp?item=DVI%2D8700&off=27&sort=prod&skuonly=0&search=dvi+vga+adapter&pagesize=20
